Surface Treatment
Vanchem’s surface treatment technologies for today’s modern paint line
Surface treatment is a generic term that can have multiple meanings. For Vanchem, surface treatment means the chemical preparation of steel or plastic before applying a paint finish. There is a large variety of coatings pretreatment available from Vanchem that will meet all your needs. See the links for more information on Vanchem’s specific technologies.
Surface treatment processes in the industrial sector are designed to increase paint durability, adhesion, and increased field performance. Vanchem has an extensive line of metal finishing, surface treatments including conversion coatings, and other industrial metal finishing technologies.
Due to cost and environmental constraints, Vanchem’s iron phosphate technology is more widely accepted as a sufficient surface treatment for metal parts exposed to outdoor elements. In the past, zinc phosphate surface treatment was the leading technology for high level paint performance. However, with the advance in Vanchem’s iron phosphate technology, like our FOSTEX 11, we are able to achieve consistent 1000-hr salt spray performance (1000-hr salt spray is equivalent to 5-years outdoor exposure) given proper cleaning (VANCLEAN 41S), phosphating (FOSTEX 11), sealing (RINSEAL 7, RINSEAL 9), and rinsing.
Zinc phosphate surface treatment is still used in automotive and military applications. Although Vanchem’s iron phosphate technology is excellent, zinc phosphate (FOSTEX ZN), everything being equal, still generates superior overall field performance. There is a general shift away from zinc phosphate because of higher operational cost, product cost, and waste water pretreatment cost. This has caused the shift towards iron phosphate or greener technologies such as Vanchem’s GREENCOAT RF. Despite the shift toward greener technologies, there is still a need for zinc and iron phosphate.
Vanchem is driven to meet the highest quality standards in formulating surface treatment products for industrial applications. For more information, contact us at our corporate headquarters in Burlington Ontario.
